Ayurveda Swarna Prashan: the ancient way of immunisation

Ayurveda Swarnaprashan is a technique of giving gold in liquid form to children to enhance their immunity and intelligence. Swarnaprashan is the ancient way of immunisation since the Vedic ages and references are taken from Manusmriti and Kashyap Samhita. It is an ancient practice that is mentioned in the Kashyapa Samhita, one of the classical texts of Ayurveda. Swarnaprashan is also known as Suvarnaprashan or Suvarna Bindu Prashan. It is one of the 16 sanskaras or rituals that are performed for the well-being of children in Hindu culture.

स्वर्णं हिरण्यं परमं पवित्रं जातकर्मणि | प्राशनं बालस्यास्य स्याद्धिरण्यं विवर्धनम् ||

This Sanskrit sloka mentions the Indian tradition of the Jatakarma ceremony and this is among 16 samskaras is done for the well-being of newborns & children.

सुवर्णप्राशन हि एतत मेधाग्निबलवर्धनम्। आयुष्यं मंगलं पुण्यं वृष्यं वर्ण्यं ग्रहापहम्॥

मासात् परममेधावी व्याधिभिर्न च धृष्यते। षडभिर्मासैः श्रुतधरः सुवर्णप्राशनाद् भवेत्॥

This verse states that Swarnaprashan enhances intellect, digestive fire, and strength. It is auspicious, and virtuous, improves complexion, and wards off evil influences. Regular intake makes a child intelligent and immune to diseases.

Swarna prashan consists of Gold Bhasma, which is a fine powder of purified gold, mixed with honey, ghee, and other herbs that have memory-enhancing and immunomodulatory properties. Some Medhya Rasayana used in Swarnaprashan are Vacha, Giloy, Shankhpushpi, Brahmi, Vidang, Pippali, Kuth, Marich, Shunthi, Ashwagandha, and Amalaki. The proportion of these ingredients may vary according to the age and condition of the child.

Swarna prashan is given to children from the age of 0 to 16 years, preferably before sunrise on an empty stomach. The best time to give Swarnaprashan is on the day of Pushya Nakshatra, which is considered auspicious for health and prosperity. Swarnaprashan can also be given daily or monthly depending on the availability and convenience of the parents.

The benefits of Swarna Prashan are manifold. It helps to boost children's immunity and protect them from various infections and diseases. It also improves the digestion, metabolism, and complexion of the children. It enhances the children's brain development, memory, intelligence, verbal and cognitive skills.
